Analytical chemists for Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability : Copenhagen, Denmark

The analytical Core facility at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking two skilled analytical chemists for targeted metabolic profiling and compound identification. 

DTU Biosustain is focused on developing the next generation of cell factories deploying advanced metabolic engineering techniques, and the development of bioprocesses for a sustainable production of chemicals and high value compounds. 
Analytics Group
The analytics group is a key group at DTU Biosustain and the purpose is to provide reliable, accurate and high throughput analytical services for the center as a whole. The analytical platforms are based on mass spectrometry technologies, using either GC or HPLC separation technologies. The analytics core addresses five analytical areas:
  • Analysis and quantification of known compounds in biological samples (targeted compound analysis/metabolite profiling)
  • Analysis and relative quantification of unknown compounds in biological samples (metabolomic analysis)
  • Analysis and identification of unknown compounds in biological samples (compound ID)
  • Analysis, identification (including post translational modification) and quantification of proteins in biological samples (proteomics) 
  • Analysis, identification and quantification of sugar molecules extracted form proteins (Glycan profiling).

Job description

Target compound/metabolite profiling
The candidate will be responsible for developing and growing targeted metabolite profiling analysis unit at DTU Biosustain. The candidate is expected to collaborate closely with other groups, both within the center and externally. The appointee will be responsible for the daily operation of the targeted metabolite profiling platform under supervision of the head of analytics. Key responsibilities will include
  • To be responsible for the design and development of high throughput analytical methods
  • To be responsible for and maintain the targeted analytical platforms
  • Ensure delivery to deadlines
  • Analyse data, prepare reports and discussion of results with collaborators
  • To actively participate in networks and collaborations within the Center and the surrounding research community
  • To handle and report experimental data in reports, lab notebooks and LIMS systems
  • To carry out any other relevant duties that may be associated to the position, and may be required from time to time

Compound ID
The candidate will be responsible for developing and growing state-of-the-art compound identification analysis unit at DTU Biosustain. The unit will operate within the analytical core facility at DTU Biosustain, and the primary duty will be extraction, isolation and MS-based characterization of bioactive natural products from the Natural bioactive compounds section (NBC-group) and performing HR-MS analysis for other groups in the center. The candidate is expected to closely collaborate with other groups, both within the center and externally. The appointee will be responsible for the daily operation of the unit under supervision of the head of analytics. Key responsibilities will include:
  • Extraction, isolation and identification of unknown compounds from microbial sources
  • LC-MS/MS method development and validation
  • Writing and maintaining SOPs
  • Setting up protocols and training other personnel to the highest standards
  • Coordinating the work undertaken by the lab with DTU Biosustain and others
  • Preparation of reports and manuscripts for publication
  • Proactively helping other team members within the analytical core
  • Qualifications (both positions)
  • The ideal candidates will have: 
  • Significant experience working in a relevant environment, preferably with a solid analytical chemistry background
  • Proven experience in chromatography method development, instrument maintenance, mass spectrometry & high throughput analysis
  • Capable of working on their own initiative when appropriate
  • Proven ability to work creatively in a team environment ( including multi-disciplinary environment)
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills
  • Strong oral and written skills in English
  • Experience working biological systems
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, responsibility, team spirit and excellent collaboration skills.
  • Computer proficiency (MS office) and Experience in reporting in lab notebooks and/or LIMS systems.
  • Expertise in the isolation and purification of bioactive natural products (compound ID)
  • Expertise/experience in de novo compound identification (compound ID)
  • Experience in interpretation of complex mass spectra (compound ID)
  • Experience working quantitative mass spec lab (targeted compound)
  • Experience in working a regulated analytical environment (targeted compound)

Salary and appointment terms 
The salary and appointment terms will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). 
The positions is available as soon as possible. 
The place of work will be the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at Kogle Allé 6, Hørsholm, but the center will relocate to DTU Lyngby Campus in 2016.
