The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting plant biochemistry research and metabolite analyses to determine the metabolic fate of herbicides and mechanisms for detoxification of chemical-defense compounds in plants. Specific duties include developing new liquid or gas chromatographic procedures for separating and quantifying parent compounds and metabolites, optimizing in vitro assays for measuring enzyme activity and inhibition analyses, maintaining analytical laboratory equipment and computer hardware/software, and assisting with the training of undergraduate and graduate students with instrument analysis and laboratory safety procedures.
Requirements: PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, agronomy, plant biology or related field of study. The candidate must possess a thorough understanding of analytical laboratory equipment and techniques for chromatographic analysis of plant secondary compounds and metabolites using RP-HPLC, LC-MS, and/or GC-MS, and must have a documented record of publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles.
It is desirable, but not essential, to have at least two years of working experience in an analytical chemistry, organic chemistry or biochemistry laboratory using qualitative and quantitative analyses for metabolic fate determination, as well as experience in extracting and determining the metabolic fate of organic compounds from plant or soil matrices. Experience in identifying unknown compounds extracted from plant tissues using mass spectrometry is also beneficial but not required.
